Luke in the water

Now that summer is here, we've had a few opportunities to go swimming. Luke likes to do familiar things. Whenever something new is introduced, he takes a while to warm up to it. For example, tonight we went to a big party with bounce houses and a slip n slide. He had never seen a slip n slide before. I tried to get him to go on it, and he threw a temper tantrum. So we just sat and watched the kids for a while and I talked about it with him a little bit ("there she goes down the slide" type of stuff). After a while, he stood next to the slide and started laughing whenever people fell and slid. Soon, he wouldn't leave the slip n slide. It was so cute to see him try so hard to slide like the big kids. Occasionally, I'd just pull him down about 10 feet of the slide. Anyway, the point of this whole thing is, Luke doesn't like new things.

Luke has been swimming in previous summers, but it had definitely been a while, so it was basically a whole new thing. We first took him to 7 Peaks with my family, but he never went anywhere that wasn't 1 foot deep. He had a great time though. Then we took him swimming over Fourth of July weekend, once at the motel we were staying in and once at my friend JaNae's house. Luke was definitely not too happy about the pool at first. He kept saying "All done" over and over. By the end though, we had him jumping into the water (into our arms, of course). He still won't blow bubbles, but he'll dunk his head under. If given a floatie, he knows that kicking will help him move.

Last week, we brought him to a local pool and he had a fantastic time. He just about jumped back into the water after I'd gotten him out and dressed. Luckily, we stopped him, because no one was in the pool where he was headed for. We don't go swimming enough for swim lessons yet, but I'm glad he's getting at least somewhat comfortable in the water.

Oh, and I know this has nothing to do with swimming, but we've started to find Mr Potato Head all over the house....driving the car, taking a bath, eating dinner in the high chair...
